SIMWORKS Condor Spoke - 14-15 Single Butted
SimWorks' original, made-in-Japan spokes are manufactured by Hoshi Kogyo, the last spoke manufacturer in Japan and the only manufacturer certified by NJS.
The Condor Spoke is based on Starbright spokes. The spokes' characteristics are determined by the stainless steel material used. Generally, if you need a stiff wheel with good grip (acceleration), the company's stainless steel spokes, manufactured from SUS304 stainless steel, are considered superior. But did you know that Starbright spokes are the only spokes in Japan approved by the NJS and used in keirin races? The reason Starbright spokes are used in keirin races is because performance isn't the absolute priority in a publicly managed sport like keirin. The most important thing for a racing bicycle is to ensure that cheating is completely avoided and that the race is smoothly run.
As all cycling enthusiasts know, keirin racers reach speeds in excess of 70km/h just before the finish line, putting their leg strength on a completely different level than that of ordinary people. The most important element of spokes that can withstand such leg power is that they are manufactured with meticulous consideration given to preventing breakage. This is because, in the unlikely event that a spoke were to break during a race, the race would have to be temporarily stopped and all staff would have to search for the broken pieces of the spoke in order to prevent another accident, which would cause a major disruption to the smooth running of the race.
Hoshi Kogyo's Starbright spokes are made to withstand such harsh conditions, and they play a major role not only at the velodrome, but also in our daily lives. The greatest feature of Starbright spokes is that they minimize the serious problem of spoke breakage during daily commutes, active weekend rides where you want to enjoy stress-free riding, and even during long-term touring, which is the most demanding of all.
The spokes are manufactured using a special blend of highly tenacious stainless steel wire, selected by Hoshi Kogyo according to its own carefully selected criteria. This original stainless steel wire is highly flexible and naturally strong, so wheels built with Star Bright spokes are very different from wheels built with stiff spokes specifically for sports bikes, which tend to break under extreme loads. They offer increased durability and a unique softness when riding, making them less tiring to ride.
Star Bright is a popular brand among many professional wheel builders, and unlike regular products, it has SimWorks original embossing and uses 3.2mm nipples (global standard size) to ensure reliable repairs anywhere.
Additionally, the 14-15G single butted spokes that SimWorks specially requested are a specification that is not often seen on the market, but with the recent rise in demand for active riding that is not specialized for racing, such as gravel riding, the demand for hand-built wheels that are durable and easy to repair is also increasing. Many of these riders want wheels that are as light as possible while maintaining strength, which is a common request, so we thought that single butted spokes would be the best option to fulfill that, and we asked SimWorks to manufacture them so that they will become the standard in the future. We hope you will give them a try.
Just because something is high spec doesn't mean it's good for everyone, but Star Bright Spokes are the unsung heroes that teach you from the ground up what you should use your bike for and how you should interact with it. Take this opportunity to learn more about them.
