However, the trade-off was that downtube shifters and bar-end controllers, which had been available until now, could no longer be used. This downtube shifter was introduced to fill that gap.

Now that Shimano has discontinued compatible downtube shifters, the Microshift is the only downtube shifter that can operate the Tiagra/4700 series.
